KEEP YOUR BASEMENT WARM DURING WINTER

During the summer months, you may not notice a huge temperature change in your basement compared to your main level. Come winter that changes drastically. It might not make a bit of difference when you just use the basement for storage. However, if used as living space, you want to make it as comfortable as possible. Here are a few ways you can do that.
Update Doors and Windows– installing double-paned glass windows and replacing doors that offer tight sealing will prevent loss of heat, or cool air from leaking in.
Install a Heating Unit- An element designated solely for the basement. No Duct work required.
Add insulation- You can apply blanket or foam board insulation in an unfinished basement, or a spray foam in a finished basement.
Seal Cracks-look for any cracks or leaks in the walls and flooring. You can seal those with caulk, weather stripping or foam insulation.
Incorporate Space Heaters- You can use space heaters when needed. Don’t leave them unattended. However, they will certainly help warm the space up.
Seasonal Vent change- as heat rises, shut some of your upper level vents during the cooler seasons, and open all basement vents to allow more warm air to flow to the basement. When summer hits, remember to reverse this step.
Carpet and Rugs– by simply adding carpet or area rugs, you will make the basement much warmer and tolerable.
Radiant Floor Heating- You can choose between electric or a water based system. Electric underfloor heating will heat wiring under the floor and generate heat. Water based will run hot water through pipes to create the heat. Either option will provide heating from the floor up, making your basement space comfortable and cozy.
