3 CATEGORIES OF WATER DAMAGE

When water damages your commercial or residential space, the amount of damage can vary from one job to another. When we arrive at the scene, we will assess the damage and discuss the best plan of action. No matter if the job size is big or small, Crew will get your space back to normal in a timely manner.

Water damage can be classified into one of three categories. Time is critical for all categories; however, Category 2 and 3 are most crucial. Our team is trained and experienced in mitigating each category following industry standards.

Category 1 – Clean Water
Clean water does not pose substantial harm to humans. However, clean water will cause structural damage if not properly mitigated. Even though Category 1 does pose as much of a threat as 2 and 3, when not treated within 48 hours, it can turn into Category 2- gray water.

Examples of Category 1 Water Damage: when a tub or sink overflows, melting ice or snow, ice maker water line leak, broken water supply pipes, water fountain leaks, toilet bowl breaks (with no contaminants)

Category 2 – Gray Water
Gray Water contains a significant amount of contamination. This water could potentially cause illness and should be treated immediately. After 48 hours, gray water becomes Category 3- black water.

Examples of Category 2 Water Damage: dishwasher or washing machine overflows, broken aquariums, toilet bowl overflow (with urine) leaks.

Category 3 – Black Water
Black Water is very unsanitary and contains pathogenic agents capable of causing serious illness.

Examples of Category 3 Water Damage: sewage back-ups, river water, ground surface water.

When Crew answers a call for a water emergency, the first thing we do is determine the source. We remove any standing water before using our equipment to dry the affected area. Up to 70% of the water damage is hidden from the eye (walls, floorboards, and carpet). These materials act as a vapor barrier preventing everyday fans from being able to dry the now protected moisture. We will take moisture readings to determine the equipment required to properly dry everything thoroughly.
We will remove anything that cannot be saved, i.e. carpet, drywall, etc. Once the area is dry, Crew’s Construction Team will then replace what was disposed of. From start to finish, Crew will be there to deal with the damage so you don’t have to.

Crew understands that there could be lasting effects if water mitigation is not handled properly. It is more than simple aesthetics. If not handled properly, mold growth can occur under floors and behind walls. We will make sure that doesn’t happen. One call to Crew’s 24-hour emergency response is the first step in restoring your home or business back to normal as quickly as possible.
